| The Permanent Exhibition
Sandwiched between Manchester Fort and the vibrant city centre, Manchester Jewish Museum is a hidden treasure.
The Museum is located in a former Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue on Cheetham Hill Road. It is the oldest surviving synagogue building in Manchester, completed in 1874.
It is, indeed, a beautiful example of Victorian architecture, executed in Moorish style. Particularly noteworthy are the splendid stained glass windows and the distinctive cast-iron fitments.
Since the building became redundant through the movement of the Jewish population away from the area, it has been completely restored, returned to its former glory and listed Grade II*.
With a compelling history to tell, the building needed a new purpose and in 1984 it re-opened as a Museum. The Museum chronicles the lives of Jewish people in Manchester and their contribution to making the city what it is today.
We welcome people of all ages and beliefs into the Museum.
The Synagogue
The former ladies' gallery houses the permanent exhibition, in which the history of Manchester's Jewish community, is vividly bought to life.
Changing Exhibitions & Events
Throughout the year we host a number of exhibitions and events. See the 'What's On' section for more details.
Family Friendly
To make your visit enjoyable for all the family, our friendly Menorah, Moses, will guide young children around the Museum. On arrival you will receive a children’s pack containing word searches, a jigsaw, colouring activities and a story book. There is also a handling table where children can have direct contact with Judaica.
Every changing exhibition has a Family Friendly element that children can enjoy too! These usually include arts and crafts activities which are based on the theme of the current exhibition.
Other events that we hold are based on many aspects of Judaism such as the main Jewish festivals and the Shabbat.
We also have specific ‘Festival Family Fun Days’ throughout the year where entry is free and the activities are aimed specifically at children. Children will enjoy activities, games and story telling. These events are great fun and allow the children to learn about Jewish festivals from our friendly staff and volunteers.
